Camden Brooks
The main character. Most of the novel is from his viewpoint.
Cam is a college student living in Scotland, visiting his family in London in the summers whenever he can. He's very close to his aunt May and cousin Clara, and would've loved to stay with them back when his mother moved in with her new husband. He has hunting experience due to his stepfather being an avid hunter, the both of them bonding over weekends spent out on the prowl, but an otherwise strained relationship with his parents.Camden is a Conjurer, someone able to summon and bind demons, having gained the skills while he helped Clara develop her own Witch abilities. The two of them ended up joining a Coven, and Cam's plans had been to continue studying magic during his next vacation when the Cataclysm hit, stranding him in the middle of Scotland with only his covenant and his dear dog, Asha. He's a friendly person though distrustful against any stranger, and his comparatively short time learning magic means that even though he's in a covenant with Noé, Cam has trouble casting magic. Also has a surprising amount of compassion for the Other Side and magical beings even before the Cataclysm, treating demons and Familiars as people from the get-go.
Noé
The deuteragonist of the novel, Noé is the bound demon summoned by Camden.
His past is mostly a mystery, though he's certainly long-lived enough to have experienced the Roman invasion of France. Due to the nature of summoning circles, despite not aiming for Noé specifically, he is the one who answered Cam's calls, and he tries his best to teach the Conjurer about magic, as per their contract. Noé was more successful about imparting general demonology than the arcane, something he regrets once they find themselves wandering the lands on their journey to London.Noé is known under many names, such as Nanaeel, the Keeper of Mysteries, or
Clara, Mary-Ann and Co.
Cam's friends and family back in London, who he's trying to desperately reunite with again. From left to right:Clara Brooks, Camden's younger cousin. They share the same hair color and prospensity for magic, though in Clara's case her natural abilities as a Witch come from her unnamed father's side. She met the Coven through Samira, exchanging letters and texts with Mary-Ann before being accepted as a member together with Camden. Her Familiar is the cat-shaped Miette, born out of the same heirloom that Camden bound Noé to, a pair of lockets that belonged to their grandmother.
Clara was still trying to figure out what kind of Witch she is when the Cataclysm happened.Mary-Ann, Head Witch of the Coven. She is an immensely powerful Witch with mastery over fire-aligned magic, despite her cool appearance. She used to be part of a different Coven before breaking off to found her own, taking on Ralph as her first member. Mary-Ann is the one responsible for recognizing and guiding Cam's talents as a Conjurer, seeing his thirst for magic and his growing envy of not being able to use it.
Her Familiars are her trusty Nevermore, a mechanical raven, and Henrietta, a mechanical chicken with the coloration of a rooster who is a literal mother-hen to the other members of the Coven.Ralph is a Conjurer and bounty hunter for hire, working solo as a government contract to take care of problems arising from either Witches or the Other Side. He's a jovial fellow who hides a sharp mind, as he'd been a member of the Royal Marines before starting in his new business. His main contracted demon is the stern Merihim, a devil who could not have a more different personality to Ralph. Despite the fact that they get along like oil and water, their partnership holds strong, and Merihim has something like grudging respect for Ralph. A new addition is Franz the wolpertinger, aquired during the Cataclysm.Samira is another Witch and the last member of Mary-Ann's Coven, a talented young woman who enjoys androgyny as much as frilly pink things. Sam specializes in ice-based magic and is one of the few Witches who doesn't have a constant Familiar. She operates closer to Conjurers, befriending residents of the Other Side and getting their help in return for hers, though an angel seems to have started following her around after the Cataclysm.
Residents of the Lancaster Bay area
A settlement Camden and Noé visit on their way to London and whom they grow close to after they notice that Maeve is a budding Witch.Maeve is heralded as a seer by the settlement after she started getting clairvoyant visions, a spitfire girl who should've still been in high school. She's a whiz with radio equipment, commandeering a broadcasting network where she mostly talks about the weather and current events. Cam and Noé help her realize her abilities, and her radio equipment becomes her Familiar, Cassandra.Laurence is Maeve's father, a police officer with connections in London. He stumbles across Camden while on patrol before letting him into the settlement for rest and recuperation, growing fond of Cam along the way.Jasmine Holloway and Ivy Holloway join the settlement of the Bay after Cam's urging, stuck in the region after vacationing. Despite her human appearance, Ivy is a doll-shaped Familiar that the late Holloway Senior created to protect his daughter, Jasmine. Because her creator had wanted a sister to his daughter, Ivy was raised a human, and both her and Jasmine's knowledge about magic is lacking as a result.
Others
Alistair Sinclair is the cult-like leader of the settlement...
Trifecta of Dogs
The three dogs of the story: Asha, Khoi and Pongo.
Asha was the childhood puppy and hunting dog of Camden, sadly passing away before the start of the novel. Her name is of Arabic/Persian origin, meaning life or hope, wearing a green collar because it is the color of hope as well. Cam ends up wearing the collar as a choker for most of the novel, only losing it when he's in despair himself.
Khoi is Maeve's demon guard, a marsh-green and semi-aquatic hound who is injured in his first appearance, before getting better. His name is derived from koi fish, representative of perseverance in the face of adversity.
And lastly Pongo, who takes his name and appearance from 101 Dalmatians' main dog. The constellation canis major can be found as patterns on his fur. Pongo is directly responsible for creating and maintaining communication between the settlements in post-cataclysmic London, creating a barking relay reminiscent of the one found in Disney's 101 Dalmatians. Pongo's eyes are green, once more continuing the narrative of the color, and he is the third named dog to be met on Cam's journey.Asha, Khoi and Pongo stand symbolically as Man's Best Friend and a cycle of hope: first there is despair (Asha), then perservance (Khoi), and lastly a survival/ new beginnings (Pongo). Three dogs were chosen because of the widespread association with the number 3 across religions and sciences, and also more colloquially because "third time's the charm!"
